Man Getting Handed a TicketIf you've recently gotten a ticket for driving under the influence (DUI) or driving recklessly, then you may be required to have SR-22 coverage. Many states mandate this type of insurance — as a penalty of sorts — for drivers who need a little extra liability for their auto insurance to drive their cars legally.

What Is SR-22 Insurance?

SR-22 insurance isn't insurance coverage by itself. Instead, it is a certificate proving that you have the proper coverage required of you by the court or your Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). In essence, the certificate affirms that you are in compliance with the mandate that you have liability insurance. The certificate is sent to your DMV and kept on file for a prescribed amount of time. Since your SR-22 is simply a certificate, it doesn't qualify as car insurance. You will have to purchase auto insurance in addition to your SR-22 coverage.

Liability Insurance

When you get SR-22 coverage, you also need to purchase a form of liability insurance. Liability insurance protects other drivers from bodily injury and personal damage expenses that you may cause. Essentially, if you are in an at-fault accident, your basic liability insurance may help cover the costs associated with the injuries the other party sustains, as well as their personal property.

Collision Insurance

Another type of insurance you can choose to purchase to protect yourself while driving is collision coverage. Collision insurance may help you cover the costs associated with repairing or replacing your car when you are in an accident. Collision insurance complements your liability insurance coverage because it can help you get back on the road, while liability insurance helps the other party with their expenses. If you choose not to have collision insurance, then you will likely have to cover the costs of your repairs on your own.

Comprehensive Insurance

With comprehensive insurance, you get more coverage. Depending on the type of comprehensive insurance you have, your insurer may help you with weather-related damage to your vehicle and vandalism. Of course, in order to have comprehensive insurance, you also have to purchase liability and collision coverage.

SR-22 coverage isn't full coverage insurance. However, if you have been mandated to purchase an SR-22 certificate, then you will need it in order to drive legally. Your insurance provider can help you get SR-22 coverage with a simple call to their office.
