What to Do After a Car Accident

What to Do After a Car Accident

Before the accident, plan the after.

Five steps to take after the accident.

Whether it happens on a bridge across the Mississippi or a back road in the country, being involved in a car accident can be stressful. Knowing what to do will help you feel less anxious if it ever happens.

Some steps to take:

  • Stop your car in a safe place and make sure you and your passengers are okay. Then move your car off the road to safety, if possible

  • Exchange information with the other driver and any witnesses, including names, phone numbers, license plate numbers and insurance company names. Never disclose your insurance limits

  • Do not say the accident was your fault or accuse the other driver of fault at the scene

  • Call the police to let them know about the accident, in case they want to come to the location

  • Call your insurance company to report the accident and file your claim

How Exactly Can Roadside Assistance Help?

Don’t be stranded if your car breaks down! Add roadside assistance coverage to your auto policy.

If you are looking to purchase a new auto policy or are considering making changes to your current one, you might also be thinking about adding roadside assistance coverage.

With this type of coverage, the next time you find yourself stranded alongside I-55 or that back road out of town, you will be able to call from the road for help at the scene when:

  • Your car suffers a mechanical/electrical breakdown

  • You get locked out of your vehicle

  • You need to have your car towed to a nearby, preferred repair facility

  • Your car battery dies

  • You get a flat tire

  • You run out of gas

  • You get stuck in mud or snow within 100 feet of a roadway
